December 21, 2005 - #164 of 365

Brewer: Flying Dog Brewing Company (Colorado, USA)
Beer: Wild Dog
Style: Weizenbock
abv: 8%

Background: 750 mL bottle from the store. This brewery sucks, but this is a special release.

Appearance: Pours murky brown with a large off-white head that quickly disappears.

Aroma: Very strong wheat, cloves, and light fruit, mostly banana and apricot. There's a background of toffee and other dark malt aromas.

Flavor: Reminds me of my homebrewed Hefeweizen--very wheaty, with some banana. There are some dark malt flavors at the finish. The wheat in the finish, however, tastes like mold.

Notes: Eh.

Rating: 3.3 out of 5

Genessee Premium Lager

When in Rome (or Portage)

December 17, 2005 - #160 of 365

Brewer: Troegs Brewing Company (Pennsylvania, USA)
Beer: Dreamweaver Wheat
Style: Hefeweizen
abv:

Good.

December 16, 2005 - #159 of 365

Brewer: Dogfish Head Brewery (Delaware, USA)
Beer: Olde School
Style: Barley Wine
abv: 15%

Background: Bottle from the store. My car got stuck at the bottom of my driveway and I had to walk to get this one out of it--half in the woods, where thorns stabbed at my every step, and half on the driveway itself, where the ice made eels of my boots.

Appearance: Pours amber-gold with a small, dense white head and a lot of effervescence.

Aroma: Biscuit, raisin, and some nice hops to balance.

Flavor: Very well-balanced, with the malt (bread, dark fruit, caramel) taking over at the beginning and the hops coming in at the end to give it a dry, bitter finish. The alcohol is no more perceptible than it should be in a Barley Wine.

Notes: Very good.

Rating: 3.9 out of 5
